An ultra-rare albino kangaroo discovered on a Dalby reserve has tourists flocking to the region to get a sight of the hopping phenomenon named Casper.

The young dinstinct roo was first sighted at Lake Broad Water Recreation Reserve earlier this month and was lovingly nicknamed ‘Casper’ for her ghostly white fur by caretaker Megan Walker

Caused by a genetic mutation that results in white fur and pink skin, albino kangaroos occur in about just one in 100,000 cases.

Ms Walker said Casper’s discovery had been a wonderful surprise.

“My husband and I were on the way back from doing our afternoon rounds and we spotted her in the field,” she said.

“We spotted her little pink ears first and I pointed her out so we went for a closer look, she popped up out of the grass and noticed she was an albino roo.

“I contacted a local flora and fauna hunter that we know and he has said to us that one or two are found every 12 months.

“We don't have total confirmation that she is albino but our flora and fauna hunter thinks she is.”

Ms Walker said the discovery of Casper had created quite the stir with guests eager to catch a glimpse of the mysterious marsupial.

“It is unreal, I didn't think in my lifetime I’d see such a thing, to be able to spot it ourselves and live on the premises where she's hanging out is unheard of, we are very lucky,” she said.

“We have had a few campers over the last weekend that saw the post on facebook and came out hoping to catch a glimpse of Casper.

“There are a few mobs of kangaroos out there and they spread out across the conservation area so it just so happens where we live is near the bird hive is and that’s where she has been spotted.

“Everyone is very excited, the campers that got photos of her passed those photos onto us, we’ve been letting kids know she is out there and we are seeing families walking around trying to spot her so it has been really cool.”

Ms Walker said the Dalby reserve was home to all manner of rare and wonderful creatures including the ‘near threatened’ golden gecko, an incredibly rare sight in the wild.

“We have a lot of reptiles out here and someone recently sighted golden tail gecko and they are quite hard to spot as well,” she said.

“We encourage people to come out, sit, relax, we have an atmosphere that can't be beaten, we are surrounded by wildlife, we have boats, jet skis and kayaks, hiking, bird trails and now we have a white kangaroo.”
