BRISBANE residents would get a second yellow bin for free in an effort to curb overflowing recycling going to landfill, in a $13 million election announcement by Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner.
Also unveiled was a new policy to allow renters to get $127 worth of tip vouchers as well as free native plants.

Previously, only owner-occupiers had been able to access these schemes freely.
Residents will also get a free worm farm kit for composting.
Cr Schrinner said the LNP’s Greener Brisbane Package would save households $247 each year.
“The new initiative … is aimed at increasing recycling and reducing the cost on households as well in waste management,” he said.
“A big part of that is providing residents with the opportunity for a second yellow top bin at no cost, or a larger yellow top bin.”
Cr Schrinner, who made the announcement at a glass recycling facility in Wacol, said the additional bins would stop recycling from overflowing into general waste.
“We know that yellow top bins in many households are filling up by the end of the fortnight,” he said.
Renters would also get access to 10 tip vouchers for free.
“In cases where people are renting, they may not have access to those waste vouchers – it depends on whether the landlords hand them over,” Cr Schrinner said.
“We will directly provide those to tenants,” he said.
The Free Tree Programme, previously only open to ratepayers, would also be made available to all Brisbane residents, including renters.
Residents would also be able to order a worm farm starter kit to compost their food waste, valued at $70.
Reacting to the announcement, Labor’s candidate for Lord Mayor Patrick Condren said the figures on Cr Schrinner’s announcement didn’t add up.
“According to the Lord Mayor’s own figures, there’s 190,000 renters and the cost of providing them with dump vouchers is $127 each,” Mr Condren said.
“That’s $24 million, which is almost twice what he said his entire package is worth.”
“Where’s the money coming from Lord Mayor?”
