After spending more than a year in custody after subjecting a Toowoomba woman to brutish domestic violence crimes, a 32-year-old NSW-born man was released back into the community.

Toowoomba District Court was told Nicholas Aaron Everett had a lengthy criminal history which included domestic violence crimes against four Queensland women and one NSW woman, some of which were stalking, harassment, verbal abuse, and larceny.

It also included a number of entries for drug, property, and dishonest offences.

On Tuesday, December 10, Everett pleaded guilty to a number of DV charges including threatening violence, wilful damage, and the unlawful use of a car.

The court was told about three months after the father was released from prison in July 2023, after spending nine months in jail for domestic violence crimes, he began a relationship with his fifth victim.

Crown prosecutor Nicole Friedewald said Everett met the woman online and soon began a relationship that was quickly marred by domestic violence.

Ms Friedewald said during an argument on October 17, 2023, Everett verbally abused the woman, calling her derogatory names, and smashed her car with a hammer and his fists which caused damage.

She asked Everett to leave, however Everett returned three days later when another abusive argument ensued when she refused to have sex with him.

Ms Friedewald said Everett then took the woman’s car, came home without it, and told her he threw her car keys in the bush.

“Have fun finding them s-ut,” he said.

However, Everett retrieved the car, before again returning home without it, this time telling the woman he left it parked elsewhere with its lights on so the battery would run flat.

A few days later, Ms Friedewald said Everett sent the woman a threatening video, where he showed her a gun, cocked it, and pulled the trigger.

“I f--king dare you,” he said to the camera, before threatening to “shoot up” the woman’s home and her family’s home.

A police report was filed the following week prompting Everett’s immediate arrest, and he was remanded in custody since.

Ms Friedewald said the mature man’s behaviour was concerning and frightening especially given his criminal history involving multiple aggrieved former partners.

She said any woman who was in a relationship with Everett required protection, and she was concerned about him being released into the community with no supervision.

Barrister Jessica Goldie, instructed by Bell Criminal Lawyers, did not put the father’s antecedence on the record, however noted he had a long-term drug addiction.

Everett’s addiction was said to be the root cause of his abusive relationship with women.

Ms Goldie said while in custody Everett completed a number of courses to address his addiction.

She said he was open to a probation order to keep himself on track once released from jail even though he had already served a substantial amount of time in custody.

Judge Nicole Kefford sentenced Everett to a 12-month jail term, suspended for 12 months, and declared 366 days that he spent in pre-sentence custody, and the remaining 40 days he served were taken into account.
