Two young boys lost their mother on Wednesday morning after their family car rolled and crashed into a tree on the Moonie Highway on the Western Downs.

A mother, her partner, two boys aged six and nine, and two huskies, were travelling to Nanango from Western Australia when their car towing a trailer crashed at 8.50am.

Remnants of the family’s life was strewn across the rural highway – taped up boxes, a child’s skateboard, a dog bowl, camping gear, bikes and an Esky.

Tara Police Acting Officer In Charge Sergeant Murray Sanewski said initial reports indicated the 48-year-old woman from Dalyellup lost control of the utility after swerving to avoid an animal running across the road.

“The car swerved and rolled, the trailer came loose, and the car continued to roll four or five times before coming to a rest, hitting a tree,” he said.

Sergeant Sanewski said it was likely the woman died on impact.

He said the woman was pulled from the wreckage by her partner, who performed CPR until emergency services arrived.

The 49-year-old man and the two boys were taken to Toowoomba Hospital for treatment.

The man suffered a neck injury while the boys suffered only minor injuries.

Sergeant Sanewski said while there were no witnesses to the crash, passers-by did stop to care for the boys and dogs until emergency services arrived.

Sergeant Sanewski urged drivers to remain vigilant, especially considering Queensland’s road toll had surpassed 100 in just the first half of 2021 – the worst in decades.

“It’s better to get somewhere than to not get anywhere – now we have two kids that no longer have their mum,” he said.

“Road signs are there for a reason – people need to drive to the speed limit, signs, conditions, and their capabilities, while respecting what’s happening around them.”

The crash, which occurred 8km west of Moonie, closed the Moonie Highway for close to four hours, leaving a long line of trucks, local farmers, and travellers stranded.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services organised to take the family’s dogs to a local shelter or council pound.

It’s understood the car and trailer was packed with luggage and personal items.

Queensland Police is appealing for drivers to review their dashcams for any footage of the white Mitsubishi utility.
