Four Chinchilla women will embark on the trek of a lifetime mirroring the arduous journey of Australian Diggers in World War II, with one woman challenging herself to the gruelling hike after nearly losing her own life.
Amanda Keogh was encouraged to dive headfirst in her next greatest challenge by friend Courtney Hartwig, who alongside Kaela Stober and Rochelle Mills, will join her in June for the Kokoda Challenge on the Sunshine Coast.
Ms Keogh said while the thought of enduring the cold weather and rough terrain for 18km was daunting, she was excited to see what she could accomplish after a life-threatening battle.
“I have severe endometriosis and I nearly lost my life having my son,” she said.
“Since then I had a hysterectomy 18 months ago, so I really want to push myself physically by getting back into fitness.”
Established in 2004, the Kokoda Youth Foundations supports Australians through an annual hiking endurance event in honour of the Australian soldiers who fought in Papua New Guinea in 1942.
The brave women will trek 18km up and down the steep slopes of the Sunshine Coast hinterland.
Ms Keogh said training starts this weekend, with herself, Ms Hartwig, Ms Stober and Ms Mills taking on their own timed 18km challenge through Chinchilla, to the weir and back.
