A man who police allege struck an older man in the head at a private Western Downs residence has had his matter mentioned in court.

Jye Patrick Hocken-Thiedeke, 21, had his matter raised in Dalby Magistrates Court on Wednesday afternoon, after he was charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm.

A representative from Skuse Graham lawyers appeared via phone in court and Mr Hocken-Thiedeke made no application for bail.

Acting magistrate Michael Bice ordered a brief of evidence to be finalised by January 12 in 2024, and adjourned the matter to January 23 in Dalby court.

Mr Hocken-Thiedeke was remanded in custody, and his appearance will not be required on the next adjournment.

It was reported earlier that the alleged victim was fighting for his life in hospital after he suffered a critical head injury in the alleged assault.

A Queensland Police spokesperson said it was alleged the 21-year-old struck a 45-year-old man in the head at a private address in Chinchilla at 9pm on Tuesday.

This allegedly caused the 45-year-old man to fall and he suffered a critical head injury.

Emergency services were called to the scene where paramedics stabilised the man before he was flown to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition.

Police arrested Mr Hocken-Thiedeke at the scene.

He was charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said the men were known to each other.
