Four teachers with a passion for science and beer have unveiled the name of their brand new microbrewery in Chinchilla.

Under construction in the former Chinchilla News building, Mayne Street Brewing will seek to maintain the building’s historical heritage while producing delicious beers and boosting the town’s tourism potential.

The site is the second of two microbreweries being built in town with Charley’s Creek Brewing Co under construction at the Clover Hill Ranch tourist park.

Teachers Brad Hubbard, Brian Hobson, Glen Ivers and Steve Johnson initially formed as a beer brewing social club based in a vacant convent building next door to the local St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School before deciding to open up a place of their own.

“The Development application has gone through and we now have a name, Mayne Street Brewing,” Brad Hubbard said.

“Construction is going fairly well, we are working our way through redesigning and are constituting the building so it is fit for purpose.

“We will have a couple of main bars, a brew club area and there is also the brewing area where the magic happens and eventually we have plans for a beer garden out the back.

“We aren’t sure when the doors will open but we are hoping to be brewing again within a month or two and hoping to open up our brew club.

“Even though we won’t be trading yet we operate a club where people can come along and brew their own beer and sample some of ours.”

Mr Hubbard said they would be offering a variety of full-flavoured beers for guests to enjoy.

“They are going to taste really good, our beers have a lot of body to them and a lot of flavour,” he said.

“They’ll feel heavier in the mouth compared to a normal beer, if you drink our beer and then go taste other beers they’ll taste like water.

“We will have lagers, pale ales, Irish reds, dark stouts, session ales and some beers endemic to other countries like English porters, German dunkels, and Belgian wheat beers.

Mr Hubbard said the idea was a marriage of the friend’s love of science and getting together over a few cold ones.

“We teach physics and chemistry in school and the science of it and the way all of the ingredients come together is interesting,” he said.

“There is also the social side of people getting together, tasting, finding what they like and maybe brewing their own stuff.

“Part of the idea of the brew club is people can join and experiment and brew their own beers, members of the public can come up with their own beer that we can sell at the bar.

“We keep getting positive feedback, when people know what we are doing here they are getting really excited.”

Mr Hubbard said he expected the site to have positive tourism implications for Chinchilla.

“With the other brewery also starting up there is an opportunity to work together, if you’ve got two breweries here it’s a reason to make the trip out here,” he said.

“We are also talking about having a few weekends where people can have a hit of golf or tennis in the morning and come tour the brewery in the afternoon.”
