A young Central Queensland student will have her long locks chopped to raise money for cancer. It will be just the fourth haircut she’s ever had.

For young Tanishah James, cancer hits close to home.

The 10-year-old Emerald North State School student’s adored great grandad suffered from blood cancer and passed away the day before first birthday, so Tanishah wants to do her bit to help.

Tanishah is taking part in this year’s World’s Greatest Shave because she said she had longer hair and wanted to help people diagnosed with blood cancer.

“ I’ve been keeping my hair for 10 years and I decided to do it... for the people who have blood cancer and my great grandad,” Tanishah said.

Tanishah, whose hair is about 80cm long, will have her hair cut at a school assembly on Wednesday, March 15 by a hairdresser from Genesis Hair Design.

This will be just the fourth haircut she’s ever had and the hair will be made into a wig for another child.

She has the support of her family, friends, and the school.

“Some are actually excited and Mum and Dad are very proud of me,” Tanishah said.

Her Dad and Mum were there to support her.

Her parents, Michelle and Steve James, said they were ‘proud as punch’.

“I can’t elaborate, essentially, how much more ecstatic we are to see her want to do something that’s charitable on her own behalf,” Steve said.

“It was something that was just sort of suggested to her as an idea and the idea of her being able to donate that hair to other children was enough to make her want to do it.”

Michelle said that it wasn’t just about the hair Tanishah was donating, but that the money she raised along the way would help with people with cancer and their family with certain things.

Tanishah’s goal is to raise $700 and so far she has reached $135 which has provided one family going through cancer with one week of accommodation.
