Farmers, schools and businesses in the Emerald area could have more dependable internet and mobile phone connectivity, if Labor wins the upcoming Federal Election.

Labor has promised to improve fibre National Broadband Network (NBN) and mobile coverage in the Flynn electorate, in areas southwest of Emerald, if elected when voters head to the polls this Saturday, May 21.

As part of its Better Connectivity for Rural and Regional Australia plan, Labor says its will provide $750,000 to upgrade mobile coverage in the area, and provide up to 29,000 small businesses and homes with better NBN as a part of their full-fibre growth plans.

Labor has also promised $30 million to expand on farm connectivity and allow superior wireless expansion results on the land.

This scheme would encourage more Queensland farmers to use more connected equipment and sensor technology to increase their productivity.

Labor candidate for Flynn, Matt Burnett, believes that if Australia continues under a Liberal Government that mobile and internet access and reliability won’t be increased, and farmers’ daily activities that require a mobile or internet will continue to be more difficult.

“Improving regional connectivity is a top priority for Labor, and our plans will boost mobile coverage and NBN quality for residents and businesses across Flynn,” he said.

“I recently visited Evergreen Farms and I heard first-hand how difficult it was there for them to undertake their normal business and live life as a rural primary producer.

“Our region’s primary producers have a tough enough life on the land without the added stress of not being able to call a doctor when a family member gets sick or there’s an unfortunate accident on the property.”
