A Clermont teenager was caught drink driving at a camp draft, while travelling along a dirt road at the grounds.

Jonathon James Merrin, 19, pleaded guilty at Clermont Magistrates Court on August 11 to driving over the general alcohol limit but not the middle limit while holding a provisional license.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Paul Cramp said police attended the Camooweal Campdraft And Rodeo on May 29, where they noticed a Toyota ute parked near the food trucks about 12.30am with a number of people standing around it and looking at them.

The officers patrolled the area and heard a vehicle start and leave swiftly, which on return they noticed was the Toyota ute they previously saw.

Sergeant Cramp said the officers located the ute about 250m away from the initial location.

Merrin, the holder of a P1 license, was driving and later returned a blood-alcohol content reading of .093.

He told police he’d been driving Canadian Club and beer from about 6.30pm on Friday.

Merrin said he didn’t think he would get in trouble for driving since it was on the dirt road inside the rodeo grounds.

Magistrate Robert Walker said that wasn’t an excuse.

Merrin was fined $500 and disqualified from driving for three months. A conviction was recorded.
