Central Highlands 2022 Christmas lights competition now open

The countdown to Christmas is under way, with Central Highlands businesses and homes urged to get busy decorating and win big. Here’s everything you need to know:

The countdown to the festive season is well and truly under way, meaning it’s time to unpack the Christmas lights and get decorating.

Central Highlands residents who think they have an impressive lights display can see if they have what it takes to win the 2022 Light Up CH holiday decorating contest.

The competition is open to residents and businesses, with nominations open now until Sunday, December 4 at 11:45pm.

Central Highlands Regional Council will carry out judging on Tuesday, December 6, and Thursday, December 8.

Mayor Kerry Hayes said the Ergon had this year donated $350 for the winning business entry.

“This competition is always a wonderful way of seeing our region come together in the holiday spirit,” he said.

“And the stakes seem to get higher and higher every year.”

Competition categories are:

  • North (Tieri and Capella)
  • East (Bauhinia, Blackwater, Bluff, Duaringa and Dingo)
  • South (Arcadia Valley, Springsure and Rolleston)
  • West and Central (Comet, Emerald, Gemfields and Gindie)

Because winners are grinners there is a first-place prize of $250 and a second-place prize of $100.

There will also a total of $1000 for winners in the categories of:

  • Beryl Callaghan Spirit of Christmas Award
  • Business front
  • People’s Choice Award

Decorating safety tips

Decorators are urged to keep their homes safe, with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services offering some tips:

  • Use Australian-compliant decoration lights and follow manufacturer’s instructions on setting up and operating
  • Check if your lights are for indoor or outdoor use
  • Replace any string of lights that have worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections
  • Don’t overload electrical outlets with lights
  • Always turn off Christmas tree lights before going to bed or leaving home
