ROCK bands The Cure and The Strokes will headline this year's Splendour in the Grass music festival in Byron Bay.

The highly anticipated first line-up announcement was revealed this morning on Triple J's breakfast radio show and also included Violent Soho, The 1975, Boy and Bear, Gang of Youths and Courtney Barnett.

Australian electronic group The Avalanches will also come out of hibernation for the three-day festival.

The group has reportedly been working on a new album for the past decade.

Fans clued on to The Avalanches' possible return yesterday when the band created an Instagram account out of the blue and updated their other social media accounts.

The Melbourne band is best known for its acclaimed debut album Since I Left You, which was voted the ninth best Australian album of all time in Triple J's Hottest 100 Australian Albums of All Time poll in 2011.

Splendour in the Grass, now in its 16th year, takes place at the North Byron Parklands from July 22 to 24.

So far the reaction on social media has been mostly positive, with a few Twitter users complaining about the cost of tickets.

A three-day pass with a camping ticket will set a punter back $$495 plus booking fees and that doesn't include travel costs or food and drinks.

Tickets, which have sold out in a matter of minutes in previous years, go on sale Thursday April 21 at 9am AEST through Moshtix.
