TAME Impala made a triumphant return to the ARIA Awards tonight, taking out the top gong of the evening.

The psychedelic rockers won the same three awards they took out two years ago.

Like Lonerism, their latest release Currents was named Album of the Year and Best Rock Album. The five-piece was also named Best Group.

Tame Impala's awards haul adds to the ARIA Artisan Awards handed out last month, which saw lead singer Kevin Parker named Engineer and Producer of the Year.

Indie music darling Courtney Barnett, the most nominated artist this year, took out three awards tonight:  Best Female, Breakthrough Artist and Best Independent Release.

Barnett, who will headline next month's Woodford Folk Festival, also won an Artisan Award last month for Best Cover Art.

The star-studded event also saw pop icon Kylie Minogue welcome Tina Arena into the ARIA Hall of Fame.

In her acceptance speech, Arena called for commercial radio stations to support Australian artists not to meet their quotas but  to "exceed them because you want to".
