Emergency service crews rushed to the scene of a crash on the Burnett Highway.

The driver and victim in a pedestrian fatal on the Burnett Hwy, both from Hervey Bay, were known to each other, police have confirmed.

It comes after a 53-year-old man from Eli Waters died near Malmoe in the early hours of Sunday, September 1.

At the time, the driver, a 50-year-old Sunshine Acres man was said to be "assisting police with their inquiries".

It's understood subsequent investigations suggest the circumstances are tragic but non-suspicious.

On Thursday, a police spokeswoman said no charges had been laid.

She confirmed the men had been travelling together earlier that night.

The elder of the two sustained critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Anyone with information, including anyone who witnessed the men throughout the day leading into the crash, are urged to contact police," she said.

Emergency crews were on the scene for several hours, causing significant delays as the Burnett Highway was blocked in both directions.

This was amid ongoing disruptions caused by a catastrophic crash on the Bruce Hwy which sent heavy traffic to the alternate Burnett Hwy route.

Anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage from the area  is also asked to come forward.
