Driver’s lucky escape after caravan clash in North Burnett sends metal rod flying through windscreen

Gayndah police are warning larger vehicles to take care when crossing narrow bridges after a terrifying incident on a North Burnett road almost ended in tragedy.

A driver was lucky to avoid serious injury when two caravans attempting to cross a narrow North Burnett bridge at the same time swiped each other, sending a metal rod shooting the windscreen of a tailing vehicle.

Gayndah officer in charge Sergeant Don Auld said the rod flew off and shot through the windscreen of a Pajero station wagon, which was travelling behind one of the caravans.

The rod hit the front seat, narrowly missing the driver’s shoulder, but fortunately no one was injured.

Sergeant Auld urged drivers to take care when crossing narrow bridges and be aware that two vehicles may not always be able to cross at the same time, despite having two lanes.
