The 92nd annual Monto and District Show is on this weekend, kicking off with a rodeo after the showground gates open at 3pm on Friday.
With a jam packed schedule, the three-day event is expected to bring a large crowd, not only from the local public but from “all over the place,” and for teh first time in a decade there will be fireworks.
Friday night’s rodeo will have events such as bull riding, horse saddle and bareback riding, and barrel racing. There will also be a side show alley, food stalls, barbecue and bar, and an after-party with a DJ.
Monto and District Show Society secretary Audrey Mooney is particularly fond of the chair swing, and that “it was my favourite as a kid”.
“This year, we have really seen a bounce back after Covid, and we have had a lot of interest and everyone is being very positive.
“The Monto show is a place where work and play come together. Were we can show up and show off our hard work, whether it be in the cattle, horse or dog competitions, but we can also go and interact with hobbies, such as art, knitting and cooking.
“There will be a scavenger hunt designed to encourage guests to really look at what we have to offer this year.
“We really pushed for the show to be as relevant as possible, trying to incorporate a wide range of activities that will cater to everyone.”
The fireworks will be from 7pm Saturday night, following a round-up slide show, which will showcase snippets of the weekend's events on the big screen.
While the show will not have any feature breeds this year, there has been a lot of excitement about the featured event, the Young Herdsman competition, which hopes to encourage and commemorate young people within the cattle industry, offering a $300 prize.
A $2500 chainsaw is also up for grabs for those competing in the Rip Tear Busts Series, which starts this Sunday and continues on for two more rounds, at the Eidsvold and Biloela Shows in Central Queensland.
