A brewing giant has pledged to give away up to $2 million worth of free beer to pubs and clubs, but they’ll need punters’ help.

ONE of Australia’s largest brewers, Carlton & United Breweries, is giving away up to $2 million worth of beer in a bid to help pubs and clubs reopen after months of forced closure.

As part of the ‘For Love of Your Local’ campaign, punters can pre-purchase a beer from a venue online, with the cash donated directly to the venue and the beer donated for free to the venue.

The campaign has already raised more than $1 million for struggling pubs and clubs and CUB today announced the fundraising target has been doubled to $2 million.

Chief executive Peter Filipovic said many pubs and clubs in Queensland continue to face “enormous challenges” and the money will help them to pay mounting bills.

“The ongoing restrictions will continue to significantly limit trade and, for some venues, re-opening will have to wait until restrictions are further lifted,” he said.

“Queensland pubs and clubs have already been shut for two months and the fact is many of these beloved venues won’t make it through this crisis without extra help.”

The Plough Inn in South Brisbane will reopen on June 10 despite not being financially viable to do so.

Marketing manager Belinda Houlihan said they had decided to reopen under the new coronavirus operating restrictions to breathe some vitality back into the hotel and give their staff hope.

“Our costs remain the same even though our capacity to generate sales has been dramatically affected,” Ms Houlihan said.

“Without the support of campaigns such as For Love of Your Local and the JobKeeper program, there is no way we could open our doors.”
