A leg of the Triathlon Queensland State Series will be held in Bargara for the first time this Sunday, April 30, and is expected to bring competitors and visitors from across the state.

The Bargara Auswide Bank Sprint Triathlon will begin with an over 14’s points race, which will go towards the triathlete’s progress for the Queensland championships.

“It’s highly likely that one of the triathletes competing in the race will end up winning the state series,” Bargara Triathlon Club president Colin Stollery said.

On the day, there will also be junior races and an over 13s Give It A Try race, which is open to the public.

The over 14’s points race will consist of an individual race and teams race with a 750m swim, 20km bike ride and 5km run, while the Give It A Try race will be a 400m swim, 10km bike ride and a 3km run.

With out of town competitors coming to Bargara for the event, an economic and tourism boost is expected for the region.

“At Bargara Triathlon Club, we have encouraged visitors to make a trip of it when visiting the region for the event.”

Mr Stollery hopes that with the Bargara Auswide Bank Sprint Triathlon signed on with the Queensland Triathlon for the next three years, there will be a consistent increase in tourism to the region.

During the over 14’s points race, roads around the Bargara beachfront will be closed.

The closures will start from the Causeway Dr roundabout, along Woongarra Scenic Dr, Durdins Rd, and travelling south down Hughes Rd until stopping around the Wearing St exit.

The Hughes roads is only expected to remain closed between 6-9am, whereas the other roads closer to the event are likely to slowly reopen as the other races finish.

There will also be a randomly drawn prize for all entrants and volunteers on the day, winning a VIP day trip to Lady Musgrave Island for two.
