An independent analysis of five years of NAPLAN results has revealed the Bundaberg schools which consistently performed the best in the Year 5 and Year 9 tests between 2017 and 2021.

Over that five-year period, St Luke's Anglican School had higher Year 5 yearly results than any other school in the Bundaberg, scoring an average of 2615.0 each year.

Gooburrum State School was the second best primary school for the region, with an average score of 2532.3, while Bundaberg East State School was the third best with an average score of 2509.5.

The top performing Year 9 school was St Luke's Anglican School, where the average yearly result was 2979.5 over the five years.

St Luke‘s principal Craig Merritt said while the results were a great insight into the academic progression of literacy and numeracy the most important factor was positive student growth.

“At St Luke’s we support NAPLAN and use the information as it is intended, to help support the intellectual development of our students, as we are focused on nurturing the development of the heart, mind, and character of all our students.”

He said the school focused on creating “test-wise” students who were familiar with what to expect in an academic testing environment.

“NAPLAN is not a high-stakes test for our students, we encourage them to exercise their ‘growth mindset’ and take it as an academic challenge, to look at improving on how they have performed in the past,” he said.

Shalom College was the second best high school for the region with an average score of 2855.5, while Bundaberg Christian College was the third best with an average score of 2847.0.

To determine how each school performed between 2017 and 2021, their average scores for each year were combined and the yearly average found.

Special schools, schools with fewer than 20 students enrolled in either year, and schools that did not report any results for NAPLAN subjects in either year were excluded from the analysis.

The figures were independently compiled from the Federal Government‘s MySchool website.
