Tiktok famous Sushannah Taylor caught in Australia’s housing crisis

A young Bundaberg mother who has been documenting her family’s daily struggles with homelessness on social media, has been attacked by vicious trolls and amassed an army of online followers.

A day in the life of a homeless family

Like so many others caught up in Australia’s housing crisis, Sushannah Taylor has no idea when life will go back to normal.

The young mum has been on the street for about a month, moving around backyards and camp grounds in a small tent with her partner and two children.

It’s a story becoming heartbreakingly common.

“My landlord decided to sell the house we were renting,” Ms Taylor said.

The everyday struggles are evident in how the family must now live.

Ms Taylor’s children wear protective swimmers because they’re out in the sun so much.

Daytime naps are in a portable cradle in the open.

“(The biggest struggle is affording campsite accommodation, it's so expensive,” Ms Taylor said.

“We stay in friends’ yards for short periods of time but that’s very temporary.”

Ms Taylor, who goes by sushannah_ on social media platform Tiktok, has amassed a huge following of 20,000.

One of her videos, documenting a day in the life of being homeless in Australia, has hit 1.5 million views.

But it does not change the grim reality.

“The homeless situation here is horrible. I've called dozens of organisations that are all full, waiting list are long, applications are nightmares, it's just horrendous,” she said.

And then, like any social media platform, there are the trolls.

“The response to my Tiktok videos has been mostly great,” Ms Taylor said.

“But I do get a lot of ignorant, rude or downright hateful comments about me or my family.

“I've been told my kids should be in foster care and that I’m neglecting them by being homeless.

‘I’ve also been told that I’m choosing to be homeless, which is hilarious.”

Ms Taylor said the popularity had been confronting, but she was grateful for those who cheered her on.

“I'm not used to having this much attention,” she said.

“So it’s been a little frightening with everyone picking apart my life.

“But I love my supporters, truly kind people.”

Last month, the REIQ revealed shocking statistics on rental availability across the state.

Bundaberg remains at a tight 0.4 per cent rental vacancy.
