Junior rugby league club holds new fundraiser to cover high upkeep costs and facility upgrades

NEEDED COIN: The Biloela Panthers Junior Rugby League club is raising valuable funds at its first ever charity golf day.

THE Biloela Panthers Junior Rugby League club is thinking outside the box in order to raise needed funds for the club.

The BJRL is hosting its first ever charity golf day in a bid to get more involved with the community and fund future upgrades, according to club secretary Bianca Swift.

“We are a non-for-profit club so fundraising is how we pay our bills and make improvements,” Swift said.

“It’s something different to engage a different part of the community.

“A lot of the fundraisers we have are footy orientated, where we’d just get the families of the kids that play footy, so this is something different to let the community know us better.”

The two ball Ambrose event will also include a barbecue lunch, best dressed and novelty prizes, moneyboard and raffles.

Swift said her club was actively looking to upgrade its facilities, which was always a tough ask, with the hefty rates and upkeep costs setting the club back.

“We’ve just paid $7500 for our six months rate and our new ones are due in March,” Swift said.

“Those rates are a big investment considering there’s no rain and we need to water our fields for our kids to play on every week

“We would like to get a new automatic scoreboard, a new mower and I could go all day on what we need.”

The BJRL is actively seeking more sponsors on the day to reach its target of 14 all up, one for each of the 14 holes on the course.

“It’s a fun day and it doesn’t matter if you’ve ever played golf before,” Swift said.

“It’s nice to have a day out for everyone because there’s not a lot to do in town sometimes.”

Cost is $25 per person and participants can enter on the day.
