With an average winning margin of just four points in round two the Sunshine Coast A-Grade rugby union is well underway.
In an even contest, University played their first game of the season but three yellow cards to Caloundra hurt their chances in the 29-24 result.
Brothers travelled south where they came away with a 21-16 win over Wynnum while Maroochydore claimed a handy 22-19 result over Noosa.
Top of the table Maroochydore have the bye in round three.
SCRU A-GRADE RD 2 TEAM OF THE WEEK
1. Jarrod Young (Brothers)
In his first game back Young played out the full 80 minutes against Wynnum.
He provided a rock solid platform in the scrum and was very mobile across the field.
2. Darcy Leo (Wynnum)
The Bugs vice-captain showed his leadership from start to finish is a close quartered contest against Brothers at home.
Leo’s decision making under pressure was the biggest standout while his set piece play was strong once again.
3. Will Tanzer (Caloundra)
Was one of Caloundra’s best against a strong University forward pack and front row,
Tanzer was strong in defence and had some good hit ups.
4. Blake Enever (Caloundra)
Back-to-back selections for the former Wallaby, Enever was a constant disruption at the breakdown, showed his huge work rate and took plenty of strong carries over the gain line.
Will be hard to silence him and his impact this season.
5. Patrick Edwards (Maroochydore)
The 17-year-old was everywhere and was aggressive in everything he did.
Held his own well against some talented representative Noosa lock forwards.
The second row spots were hot commodity this week with Wynnum’s Daniel Reid, Noosa’s Harry Wright, University’s Olly Willis and Brothers Logan Pickering all performing well.
6. Luke Kimber (University)
In their first game of the season the Barbarians captain was as strong as ever with some huge pilfering plays at the ruck.
Led from the front and controlled his side well in the dying stages.
7. Kaan Askew (Caloundra)
Another flanker captain, Askew has started the season really well for Caloundra.
On Saturday against University he was hard on the ball all day long and defended really well.
8. Kyran Tanuvasa (Brothers)
Was arguably the best on ground in the Brothers and Wynnum contest.
Tanuvasa’s was everywhere in both attack and defence, eating up metres and producing strong front on tackles.
9. Ryan Harvey (Wynnum)
Despite the result, Harvey controlled the game really well for the Bugs.
He kicked the ball well, kept his side calm and directed his forwards with good energy.
10. Ben Stowe (Maroochydore)
Was player of the match for the Swans in their win over the Dolphins, stamping his mark on the game early and continuing until the final whistle.
Stowe was promoted from the bench in round two, controlling the game really well for his side at home.
11. Landry Bezombes (University)
Just oozes attacking flair.
University’s new recruit, who slotted in on the left wing but looks a handy utility backline star, snagged the opening try of the match while also finishing with four successful shots at goal from five attempts.
Bezombes represented the Queensland Country Heelers side under head coach Brad Tronc in 2024, falling in love with the Sunshine Coast where the Championships were held and has now joined USC.
12. Nakoa Marcroft (Brothers)
Was narrowly edged out last week by his centre pairing Sam Ah Mein and the pair were split by a whisker once again as they were a brute force against Wynnum.
Constantly found open space and metres and dominated the Bugs on the defensive end.
13. Colby Mason (University)
Was injected into the game with his side down by two with just under 30 minutes to play.
The Barbarians 2024 best back and top points scored had an immediate impact on both sides of the ball, steering his side to an eventual five point win.
14. Alapati ‘Ian’ Filipo (Maroochydore)
Played at inside centre for the Swans but would’ve been a harsh omission to leave him out of the side this week.
Filipo was great in the middle of the field with a number of big defensive stops.
15. Ben Walker (Noosa)
Dual selections from the opening two rounds from the Dolphins new recruit who once again did his best work when returning the ball from a kick.
Despite the three point loss, Walker’s confidence and attacking threat in open play was key for his side.Wynnum fullback and captain Alex Sinclair was also strong as always against Brothers, unfortunately he broke his nose and pulled his hamstring all in the same game.
Honourable Mentions: Tye James (Maroochydore), Mitch Schneider (Maroochydore), Lachie Moffat (Maroochydore), Logan Pickering (Brothers), Sam Ah Mein (Brothers), Daniel Reid (Wynnum), Alex Sinclair (Wynnum), Olly Willis (University), Harry Wright (Noosa) and Joey Caputo (Noosa).
