Bundaberg cricket identity Jim Deem was entered for the Queensland Local Hero Award after nearly five decades serving the sports he loves.

In 1967, Mr Deem was instrumental in turning a council dump at Kendalls Flat into one of the state's best junior cricket facilities and even after nearly 50 years as an umpire with the BCA, standing behind the stumps at Bundaberg cricket Mr Deem said he would do the same again.

"To be nominated was pretty exciting - I was surprised to get the call," he said.

"For all those years I had a wonderful lady, my wife Margaret, behind me supporting me all the way."

"I had been umpiring for 46 years and had been doing it because I wanted to, and I'd do it all over again if I had to."

A founding member of the Bundaberg Junior Cricket Association, devoting many hours to preparing wickets and outfields, and building the first clubhouse.

He was registrar, treasurer and then club president for more than 20 years, organising state carnivals and championships, umpiring games and transforming the association grounds into one of Queensland's best.

His efforts with his local hockey and senior cricket clubs are just as impressive. Jim rolls up his sleeves to help where he's needed - whether that's umpiring a match, running a club canteen or rebuilding a clubhouse after the devastating 2011 and 2013 floods - and his efforts have benefited the community for over 50 years.

The Queensland Australian of the Year winners will be announced on November 13.
