Following a freak storm that brought down part of its concrete safety wall 12 months ago, Bundaberg’s speedway is again facing the same challenge this year after even more of the wall collapsed.

Carina International Speedway lost about 100 metres of the concrete safety wall from the main stretch in the lead up to Christmas, 2023, promoter Pearce Barry said.

The damage was done after a freak storm on the night of a monster truck show at the speedway, Mr Barry said.

But after repairs were carried out and the speedway reopened, last month it was again facing the same issue when about 200m of the concrete wall collapsed.

It happened two days before the speedway was set to hold a major event, Modlite Madness, on February 1, Mr Barry said, and meant that another event planned for February 22 had now had to be cancelled as they worked to repair the wall.

Mr Barry said the concrete had to be allowed to set and cure, which was why the decision had been made to cancel February’s second event.

“It’s really disappointing,” he said.

Multiple photos have been shared to the speedway’s Facebook page, showing the damage and the work being down to carry out repairs.

The wall was there for both the safety of the crowd and competitors.

“We can't race without it,” Mr Barry said.

Mr Barry said between heavy rain and issues with the concrete wall, the speedway had only been able to been able to hold 50 per cent of its planned events in the last 12 months.

“It all comes down to mother nature,” he said.

“She’s in charge, so we’ve just got to go with the flow.”

While the February Throwdown had been cancelled for later this month, Mr Barry said it was hoped the wall would be repaired in time for March, when the Modified Sedan Carina Classic is set to be held.
