‘So close to vomiting’: Foul smell confounds Bundaberg Regional Council

A foul smell has been haunting the Bundaberg air, gagging residents and stumping the council.

A foul smell has wafted through a number of Bundaberg suburbs, leaving the council stumped and residents unhappy.

From Baldwin Swamp to Bundaberg South, Avenell Heights and beyond, residents have taken to social media to share their unpleasant situation.

“I have turned the house upside down, washed all my floors, looked in corners, thinking one of the dogs has had an accident,” one Bundaberg East resident shared on Facebook.

“Today I cleared out all cupboards, and cannot find anything. Tonight I sit here, smelling it again. It is disgusting.”

Another shared her own woes of fighting nausea with every breath.

“I searched the surrounds but soon realised it’s coming over in the breeze,” she said.

“I’m 7 months pregnant so the smell is making me so close to vomiting.”

Rumours circulated the issues was related to a hit sewerage line following previous council works, to dunder being laid on crops.

Several residents shared their attempts to contact the Bundaberg Regional Council in hopes of having the issue fixed.

The NewsMail also reached out to the council, which who later provided the following response.

“Council investigations have been ongoing throughout the week however to date there has been no evidence that the smell is a direct result of Council operations or services.”

So notorious was the smell, Councillor John Learmonth was forced to make his own public post on Facebook addressing the odour.

“I have had repeated comments on an odour in Division 10,” he said online.

“The odour is not sewer-related but from investigation by council the source is from the irrigation channels on the south of town.”
