In what is the second expansion in just five months, Sim Fresh has submitted a development application to the Bundaberg Regional Council for workers accommodation.

The new development proposed to house 12 new workers at Croziers Rd in Monduran as part of their seasonal worker program.

The application lodged by InsightSJC on behalf of Sim Fresh said the accommodation will be aimed at housing an overseas workforce.

“It is anticipated that the site would specifically cater for the targeted rural workforce,” the application said.

“However, the broader land use description would not prohibit non-pacific islanders from using the site.”

The site would include 9 car parks, three covered car spaces, two outdoor common rooms, two bathrooms, a dining, living and kitchen space as well as three bedrooms.

Plans include two spacious outdoor common areas for the workers.

The architectural design will follow that of previous hostels with Insight SJC noting the style of the building as not an important factor.

“Requirement for a visually attractive built form which addresses the street is not overly relevant to a rural workers’ accommodation situated in a rural area disconnected from urban development,” the application said.

At roughly five kilometres southeast of Lake Monduran, the lucky occupants may have river views as the site overlooks the Kolan River.

The workers will spend their time involved in farming operations including packing, picking and general crop maintenance.

The application states worker accommodation such as those outlined by Insight SJC are vital to the region’s growing agricultural future.

“Agriculture remains a key component of a diverse regional economy and the Bundaberg Region remains one of the largest and most diverse agricultural production areas in the country,” it said.

“Primary production and industries that add value to or complement the sector such as seasonal worker accommodation facilities ensure the sector continues to grow and prosper.”
