Quick-thinking churchgoers have managed to save their building and nearby residences from a potentially dangerous fire.
A small scrub fire broke out on a pile of sticks behind the Bundaberg Church of Christ on Dittmann Road, Avoca after 8pm on Monday night.
Members of the church quickly sprung into action to contain the fire by throwing water on the pile which was “the size of a car”, according to a QFES North Coast Region spokesman.
Smoke could be seen billowing from the pile, which was near the fence line to Argyle Retirement Village.
Firefighters arrived on scene after 8:15pm and helped to extinguish what remained of the fire.
A QFES spokesman at the scene told the NewsMail he believed the fire was deliberately lit.
No one was injured.
