Home break-ins are on the increase in the Wide Bay and Burnett, with the RACQ reporting an alarming 60 per cent rise in home theft in the past year.
The RACQ received 51 claims for home theft across the region from June 2022 to May 2023, up from 32 claims for the 12 months prior.
According to Queensland Police Service crime data, there have been 1233 unlawful entry offences across the region in the past six months, equating to six break-ins per day.
Hervey Bay is the most dangerous postcode in the Wide Bay and Burnett, with 325 unlawful entry offences in the past six months, followed by Bundaberg (307), Maryborough (189), Gympie (144) and Murgon (82).
Drug addiction and drug related crime is a common factor in the break-ins and home invasions that make it to court.
Foster persevered with the assault despite being aware one of the victims of the home invasion was holding a child; a co-offender gave up the attack after seeing the child, saying “don’t do this, he’s got a four-year-old in his arms”.
Other home invasions involved opportunistic thieves looking for valuables.
In one incident, residents of a Murgon home woke to find four juveniles in their living room, including one armed with a large piece of wood.
The youths demanded the car keys and then stole the car, which was found by police the next day.
In light of the statistics, home owners have been warned to be “extra vigilant” in securing their property before going on holidays, and to avoid posting pictures of themselves on holidays.
“Even if you’re staying at home, make a conscious effort to lock doors and windows,” RACQ spokeswoman Ashleigh Paterson said.
“Also ensure you remove valuables from sight, such as spare keys for any vehicles which may be kept at the property”.
