Members of the Bundaberg community have expressed grief over the loss of a man who left an imprint on their hearts, despite never really knowing him.

A heartfelt memorial has this week been set ups in the space where the 58-year-old man, who locals knew only as Steve, was first sighted late last year when a mother and daughter gave him some food and water.

About six weeks after initially meeting the man known as Steve, the same women found him deceased in that very area along a walking trail at Mon Repos, on the Bundaberg coast.

Locals reported that the man seemed to have had some injuries, but did not express interest in leaving the place where he was.

The Bundaberg NewsMail understands police and ambulance officers were called to the area to help the man after the women first sighted him, but a search by emergency services was not successful in finding him.

It was only when the women returned that his body was discovered back in the same place.

Police have clarified the details surrounding the event.

“On September 23, 2021, the informant for this job reported walking with her mum at the Mon Repos Conservation Reserve when they sighted a male person who was requesting some food,” a police spokesperson said.

“They purchased some food and water and gave it to him.

“The informant contacted Bargara Police who performed patrols for the male, but he was not located at that time.”

Sadly, the next time anyone saw Steve, it was too late.

“On November 5, 2021, the same informant and her mother were walking in the reserve and decided to walk past where they had seen the male some months earlier and discovered a decomposing body in bushland,” police said.

“Officers attended and located the deceased.

“Through documents found on the deceased and information provided from the informant, we were able to identify the deceased as a 58-year-old man and notified his next of kin.”

According to police, a report has been submitted to the Coroner.
