The organisers of the Cane 2 Coral fun run from Bundaberg to Bargara have explained their reasons for cancelling the event in 2022.

A spokesman for Apex said in a statement that while organisers were looking forward to the event’s return after two years, it just wasn’t possible with the challenges faced during a pandemic.

“This certainly was not an easy decision to make, however, we feel that it was the right one,” the statement read.

“Having newly taken over the event, and during a pandemic, we were faced with many new challenges as well as regulations and guidelines that were changing almost daily.

“Covid has been a major contributing factor as to why the event was not able to be held over the past couple of years.”

Organisers of the event pointed to similar events across Australia having to be cancelled for similar reasons.

“Whilst we acknowledge the restrictions have eased in the past week as per the Queensland Governments Chief Health Officer’s directive, it has come too late for us to finalise our planning processes for the event,” the spokesman said.

“Add to that, there still has been a limited number of sponsors, and sadly a somewhat limited public interest due to the event having not been held for two years, all of which was completely well outside of our control and certainly very understandable.

“This event cannot be run successfully without sponsorship, and additional support from our local community to get behind us and help to promote it.”

The spokesman said on behalf of the board, he wanted to extend sincere apologies to sponsors, participants, stakeholders, the community and fundraising recipients.

“Outside of fundraising, the Cane 2 Coral Fun Run has provided so many more benefits to our local community,” he said.

“It is a vehicle to help promote physical activity/fitness, motivate participants towards their goals, develop confidence, assist with mental health and well-being, to provide a social benefit, it has also helped to develop new friendships, provide an opportunity for team building and teamwork and more, not to mention – it’s fun.”

The spokesman said the board would be throwing “every available resource” at bringing the event back in 2023.

“The board for the past two years is outgoing, and we welcome a new board to bring a new skill set and fresh ideas on board,” he said.

“Once the new board has convened for its first few meetings, we’d like to extend the invitation to the public for the positions of committee members.

Details regarding the committee member meeting will be announced in the coming weeks.

A date for the 2023 event will be announced once the new board is finalised and all other organisational aspects have been put in place.

The Cane 2 Coral Facebook page and website will also be undergoing some changes in the meantime.
