A Bundaberg gel blaster has shot to the top of his game after being selected as a team captain in the Australian Gel Blaster League National Titles on April 10.

Kain Taylor loves the sport of gel blasting and says it’s his way of staying active and that it provides a great social community as well.

Mr Taylor’s team placed ninth out of 12 in the champs which were held at Wacol in Brisbane.

“We didn’t do too bad,” he said.

Mr Taylor’s gel blasting mates from Bundy attended the event to cheer him on, with their team jerseys on for extra support.

Winners in the now annual event take home trophies with any money raised going to a good cause.

“There’s no money involved, all money goes to charity for wounded heroes,” Mr Taylor said.

Players in the nationals are selected from smaller regional contests throughout the year and regular games are something Mr Taylor is dedicated to.

“We want to spread it. We love it that much, we want everyone else to love it as well,” he said.

The keen sportsman said he loves that gel blasting allows you to “run around like a kid”.

He attends a monthly “battle royale” in Gladstone and says he’ll continue “every month, every year till we’re too old to do it anymore”.

Gel blasting has taken off in popularity in recent years, with “guns” designed to shoot small gel orbs.

The sport is legal in Queensland and in South Australia and Mr Taylor hopes to keep it that way because of the fitness and social opportunities that come with it.

“We just don’t want it outlawed,” he said.

For anyone wanting to give gel blasting a go, Mr Taylor recommends turning up at your local gel blaster store for a look around or joining up with some online forums.

“There’s always people out there to help, you’ll never get stuck,” he said.

Mr Taylor and his mates have started building a field for game play and are hoping to see the sport grow into the future.
