Police retrieved a large haul of stolen property from a Bundaberg North house in early September, leading to the arrest and sentencing of five men aged 22 to 40.
A Queensland Police Service spokesperson said police attended the Bundaberg North residence on September 1, 2023, after receiving information that several people had been involved in multiple shop stealing offences around Bundaberg in the previous four weeks.
On searching the residence, police found a large cache of stolen property including a large volume of clothing and footwear in adult and children’s sizes, and large quantities of perfume, watches and chocolates.
A 32-year-old man, a 22-year-old man, a 40-year-old man, a 24-year-old man and a 22-year-old man, all from Bundaberg North, appeared before Bundaberg Magistrates Court on Monday, September 4, charged with one count each of unlawful possession of suspected stolen property.
The men pleaded guilty and were sentenced to three months imprisonment, suspended for 12 months.
Police have reminded local businesses to remain vigilant for shop stealing offenders and to consider additional security measures such as:
- Installing CCTV footage
- Good visibility between aisles or areas
- Limit the entry and exit points to the store
- Where possible, lock expensive and easily portable goods in cabinets
- Ensure staff are trained in store procedures when dealing with a possible shoplifter.
