A Bundaberg horse trainer will remain in custody on remand until his “overwhelmingly” serious charges proceed to a higher court after a bail application was refused.

Daniel John Honeywill represented himself via videolink in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court, facing 15 charges including unlawful supply of a weapon, stealing, and two counts of entering premises with intent.

Mr Honeywill applied for bail after his matters were adjourned to February 20, claiming the business he had successfully built as a horse trainer in the past 13 months was at risk while in custody.

He further claimed many of the charges he was facing were simple “misunderstandings” including allegedly stealing a horse trailer from his grandfather's property where his business was based.

“I just want to get out so my business doesn’t go under. I’m at a loss of income, there are horses that aren’t mine,” he said.

Mr Honeywill told the court he would willingly submit to a number of stringent bail requirements including wearing an ankle monitor, checking in with police daily, relocating his business and submitting to frequent drug tests.

Prosecutor Leon Casey said bail would be opposed and noted police would be applying for Mr Honeywill’s matter to be transferred to a higher court for heavier sentencing opportunities.

Mr Casey told the court there was an “unacceptable risk of reoffending”.

Allegedly, police had also recorded phone conversations made from the Maryborough Correctional Centre in which Mr Honeywill is charged with trying to sell a .32 calibre pistol through the prison phone.

Mr Casey told the court the “overwhelmingly seriousness” of the attempt to sell weapons from jail was a key concern for police and the reason behind their upcoming submission that Mr Honeywill’s matters be dealt with in a higher court.

Mr Honeywill was denied bail and is expected to appear in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court on February 20, 2024.
