A Bundaberg man accused of rape, possessing child exploitation material and indecently treating a child remains in jail ahead of his next court appearance.

The man has been given until late November to confirm his legal representation as he faces charges including five counts of rape, one count of attempted rape, one count of possessing child exploitation material, seven counts of indecently treating a child under 12, one count of indecently treating of a child under 12 (permit) and nine counts of indecently treating a child under 12.

The man, who cannot be named due to legal reasons, appeared via videolink from Maryborough Correctional Centre in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court on Tuesday, November 14.

Legal representative Chris Anderson appeared as friend of the court for the man.

The court was told Mr Anderson represented the man as duty lawyer when he first appeared in the Gympie Magistrates Court following his arrest earlier in the year.

Mr Anderson told the court he was aware there was a request for him to act as legal representation for the man’s matters.

“My recollection is they are serious matters that do need some good attention,” he said.

However Magistrate Edwin Rowan said to the man that according to court documents he did not have a lawyer formally assigned.

“Some of these matters, the seriousness, means they are meant to be dealt with by a higher court other than the Magistrates Court,” she said.

The man denied Mr Anderson's counsel, and told Ms Rowan he was seeking alternative counsel through legal aid following a lack of communication with Mr Anderson’s office.

Ms Rowan adjourned the matter to November 28, 2023 for the man to appear via video link with his confirmed legal representation.
