The owner of a stolen vehicle used their spare key to grab the car and return it home. Not long after, the young Bundaberg thief who pinched it in the first place came back to steal it again, the same day.

A young unemployed Bundaberg man stole the same car twice in one day, a court has heard.

Brodie Samuel Jasperse, 20, pleaded guilty to a string of charges in Bundaberg Magistrates Court on Thursday including stealing.

The court heard that on September 6, 2022, Jasperse had gone into a Bundaberg chemist and stolen bottles of perfume.

Some bottles were returned as he was caught by an employee, but Jasperse kept two bottles of Nike brand and two bottles of Adidas brand perfumes.

Between October 16 and 17, a Renault was stolen, with a subsequent police search revealing a passport in Jasperse’s possession which had belonged to the owner of the car.

It wasn’t long before Jasperse would offend again - this time twice and while on parole, a suspended sentence and a licence disqualification.

The court heard the offence happened on October 25, after an unknown person had taken keys to a Ford Falcon station wagon the night before.

According to police, Jasperse stole the car on the 25th, before its owner had been told it was seen parked on Maryborough St.

The car’s owner took their spare keys to retrieve their vehicle, but just hours after it was back at their home, Jasperse had returned to take it once again.

The court was told Jasperse used the car to carry out a $84.80 fuel drive-off at a Liberty service station just after midnight.

He was also found to be in possession of items that an unknown person had removed from another car, as well as 1g of marijuana, a bong and an electronic grinder.

Police found Jasperse with two mobile phones not in his name, leading police to believe they had either been stolen or unlawfully obtained.

Jasperse’s lawyer Lavonda Maloy told the court her client was hoping to rehabilitate by moving to Woodridge and that he had reached out to Drug Arm for assistance.

She said he had been unemployed at the time of his offending.

Jasperse, who pleaded guilty to two counts of stealing after a previous conviction, one count of driving while disqualified (for two years), one count of possessing utensils, one count of possessing a dangerous drug, two counts of receiving tainted property, one count of unlawful possession of suspected stolen property and one count of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, appeared by videolink where he had already spent 19 days in custody.

In sentencing, Magistrate Edwina Rowan urged him to change his life and not spend his adult years in custody.

Jasperse received a head sentence of eight months, along with an activated former suspended sentence, with immediate eligibility for parole.

For driving without a licence, he was disqualified from driving for a further three years.
