Easts Magpies coach Jacob Blanke knows what it takes to win a Bundaberg Rugby League premiership after leading the Hervey Bay Seagulls to success last season.
The Seagulls upset Bundaberg Past Brothers in last year’s grand final to win 34-14 and Blanke will be hoping some of that magic will rub off on his new team for the upcoming campaign.
Magpies finished fourth on the ladder last time round before losing to the Wests Panthers 34-26 in the elimination final.
Easts have a new-look team this time round and Blanke is hoping some fresh faces can bring a change of fortune for the club.
“We have a lot of new faces in the club,” the coach said.
“If the playing group comes together and play as a team, we will be a very hard side to beat.”
Easts Magpies begin their BRL campaign on Saturday, March 25 with a game against Wallaroos at Salter Oval in Bundaberg, kicking off at 4.45pm.
Coach Blanke sat down with assistant Chris Trevillion this week to pick out some players who they think will stand out this season.
Five players to watch
Trent Seeds - A powerful ball runner, who can play in the centres or fullback. Trent will be an attacking weapon for the Magpies in 2023.
Ethan Ballard - Ethan is a versatile player who brings a winning attitude and is tough as nails.
Ratu Nawerecaqa - A big, powerful outside back who will be causing opposition teams headaches every time he touches the ball.
Delroy Tanner - Delroy is a big unit and has speed to burn. He is a leader of the club and is set for a massive year.
Jayden Smith - Jayden can play anywhere in the spine, he is a smart football player who will direct our squad around the park.
