Work will kick off on the long-awaited upgrade to the Mon Repos Turtle Centre car park, with construction on Stage 2 starting in April.
The development will boost parking capacity to 110 spaces in time for the 2025-26 turtle season, helping to better accommodate the thousands of visitors who flock to the site each every year to witness nesting and hatching turtles.
The upgrade also includes improved safety and accessibility features like a designated pedestrian paths, traffic calming measures and turtle-sensitive lighting to protect the area’s famous night-time visitors.
Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said the project was an overdue fix for a well-known local issue.
“It’s no secret the car park has been a long-standing issue at Mon Repos,” Mr Bennett said.
“The turtle tour season has just come to an end with 519 turtles coming ashore this year.
“They know it’s the place to be — and so do we.
“I look forward to seeing construction start just after Anzac Day.”
Queensland Environment and Tourism Minister Andrew Powell made the announcement in Parliament this week.
