Whether you knew him from Wombat or Agro’s Cartoon Connection, there’s no doubt Jamie Dunn’s puppet, Agro is a household name nation-wide.

The hilarious “duo” has returned to Bundaberg for Agro Up Late to tell the funniest showbiz stories from Agro’s time in the spotlight in the ‘80s and ‘90s.

Puppeteer and radio presenter Jamie Dunn said the adults-only show was created after realising people still had an interest in the retro character.

“Someone, somewhere, put Agro’s Cartoon Connections up on Youtube and they’ve had over 4 million hits,” he said.

“All of a sudden, the phone started ringing again. Uber Eats called for a commercial.

“We’ve just come from Mackay where 800 people came to the show.

“I remember sitting in the box thinking ‘if only I could sell each of them a showbag!’”

Jamie says Agro fast became a household name and shot to fame in a way he never expected, with all the stories from that bygone era making up the basis of the new show.

“He was on Agro’s Cartoon Connection before school in the mornings and on the way home, he was on Wombat at four o’clock, and on Friday night he did Tonight Live,” he recalled.

“The new show is not swearing for the sake of swearing, it’s the behind the scenes of how Agro came to life and how all of a sudden this puppet got traction Australia-wide and just skyrocketed.

“I remember the People’s Choice Awards, he was up against the likes of Ray Martin and Daryl Somers.”

“He tells a lot of lies, run a lot of people down, get into Daryl Somers, all that sort of stuff.”

TV sensation Ben from Brisbane who shot to fame after his stint on Big Brother in 2013 will host the show after being a fan of Agro since he was a kid.

“He is a lovely man and very funny,” Jaime said.

“We’re working with a different direction rather than working with bubbly blondes like Ann-Marie or Theresa or Jill.”

What Bundaberg residents don’t know about the funny-man-turned-puppeteer is that he was once in a band that held a residential show at The Met Hotel in Bundaberg, who was also asked to open for a John Farnham show in the region.

“We were driving up for the Johnny Farnham show and my drums fell out the back of the trailer between Maryborough and Bundaberg and we dragged them for quite a couple of kilometres until the driver said ‘you know, there’s sparks out the back!’

“I have great memories of Bundaberg.”

Agro Up Late is in Bundaberg for one night only on March 12 from 7:30pm-9pm at the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre.
