A glorious Bundaberg winter’s day greeted a bumper crowd at the Lindsay Australia Bundaberg Cup on Saturday, July 29.

A Bundaberg Race Club spokesman said more than 1,000 tickets were sold for the first day of the Bundaberg Cup Racing Carnival.

The usual turnout of smartly dressed locals was complemented by the Melbourne Hotel Fashions on the Field, with a host of stylish ladies and dapper gentlemen competing for the prize of Best Dressed and Best Suited.

John Hopkins was awarded Best Suited with a navy plaid suit meeting the July Fashions on the Field brief of winter tones, with Verelle O’Shanesy taking out the Best Dressed award.

The convivial atmosphere in the Lindsay Australia Marquee built throughout the day, including some special guests from the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in town ahead of Sunday’s game against the Dolphins at Salter Oval.

Club legend James Graham said the sense of excitement for the NRL fixture was palpable among the Bundaberg community.

“You can see the impact it has on the community, there’s a real buzz about Bundaberg,” Mr Graham said.

“The Bulldogs were here last year, that was a real success, and it’s absolutely fantastic that the NRL comes to places like Bundaberg that don’t get the usual amount of exposure to some of the game’s greatest players.

“There’s a real opportunity for some people to come to the game and be Bulldogs fans and members for life.”

A packed race card culminated in the Lindsay Australia Ltd Bundaberg Gold Cup Open, with Rockhampton trainer Jared Whelow taking out the $12,250 prize with Kobe Rocks ridden by Brooke Johnson.
