Bargara’s Nielson Park was the Australian ideal in a microcosm as thousands turned out for The Great Australian Bites festival on Friday.
Ranging from the azure ocean and sun-kissed seaside through to the park where many sought shade from the blazing sun, revellers of all ages and diverse backgrounds celebrated Australia Day at the event sponsored by the state government in partnership with Bundaberg Regional Council.

Fears of a wet and rain-affected national day subsided as Bundaberg woke up to a glorious Australia Day holiday, with clear blue skies and a forecast maximum of 33 degrees making.
After a poignant and energising Welcome to Country by the Taribelang Cultural Aboriginal Corporation dance group, the lineup of live acts entertained on the main stage after the national anthem.
By Chance Duo and White Noise kicked off the afternoon, with Fraser Coast vocalist Derek F Smith getting the crowd on their feet and singing along to some classic Aussie rock anthems.
Magic Carpet Ride then followed local act Spargo Brothers, with Unity Drummers signing off the afternoon’s entertainment fresh from receiving their Community Group of the Year gong at Thursday’s Australia Day Awards.
As expected, Aussie colours and insignia were ubiquitous throughout the crowd, with the ‘Beshie Group’, a gathering of the local Filipino community, laying out a sumptuous feast adorned with Australian flags.
