By the end of summer, numerous jobs, a 24-hour service station and cafe are set to reach their destination in Childers.

Fuelled by a green light from the Bundaberg Regional Council, plans to create a new pit stop for travellers on the highway and the local community are one step closer to becoming a reality.

A material change of use and operational works application for a service station and cafe has been approved by the council at 164, 166 and 168 Churchill St, Childers.

The applicant, for what’s estimated to be a multimillion-dollar development, is Brisbane Prestige Property Developments.

The company’s managing director John G Samios told the NewsMail it felt “great” to have the approval.

And he said nothing had changed from the initial proposal.

“The council and community response has been fantastic and we look forward to developing a spectacular site and providing the greater community over 70 jobs for the construction phase and 25-30 permanent jobs directly and in directly for the operation of this Service Centre,” he said.

Both Metro Petroleum and Stellarossa Coffee are still the businesses pegged to operate from the site and they’re “very excited to be in the bustling dynamic area”.

Mr Samios said Metro Petroleum was “keen on dropping the average price in the area as they do when they open in a new district and as you know the Directors of Stellarossa Darren Schultz and Phil Cronin are from Bundaberg and consider themselves locals”.

With the approval now in place, Mr Samios said removing the houses and preparing the operational works for the site was next on the development’s to-do list.

He said construction was expected to start in about two to three months, with the site expected to be completed in February 2022.

Mr Samios The estimated cost for this development was $4.5m.

When the application was lodged with the council earlier this year, Mr Samios told the NewsMail noise and lighting had been taken into consideration and the service station would include VR2 – a vapour recovery control.

It was initially reported that there would be three fuel bowsers expected to operate 24 hours at the site.
