Coming together to share culture and history through indigenous storytelling is at the heart of the upcoming Wan’di – Gather Together event at the Windmill Cafe.
The event on May 14, is set to open with a welcome to Country dance by the Taribelang Group and feature a number of performances, storytelling, a two-course dinner, prizes and more.
Byron Broome, founder and traditional cultural deliverer for the Taribelang Cultural Aboriginal Corporation, through Wan’di a beautiful location, culture and community were connecting and breaking barriers.
TCAC manager and organiser Nikki Tiger said this event was about identifying the rich culture in the community and celebrating it together.
With language, the history of various sites and more showcased throughout the event, she said Wan’di was about the whole community together, all children and adults alike.
The meal served throughout the evening’s program will feature fresh local produce, seafood and native ingredients and bush fruits.
Bundaberg Tourism CEO Katherine Reid said as a key action in the destination strategic plan, Bundaberg Tourism was motivated to empower the tourism industry and Traditional Owners to share authentic indigenous experiences into current product, as well as exploring and nurturing the establishment of new cultural tourism product.
“It’s wonderful to see Joey, Nikki and Byron working together towards the Wan’di dinner event,” she said.
“We congratulate them on their initiative and hope to see the partnership grow into a scheduled monthly cultural experience.
“We are lucky to work, live and play on this beautiful land and sea country we call home and are working with a number of Traditional Owner groups to understand and share culture through tourism.”
2021 is the year of Indigenous Tourism and Bundaberg Tourism secured funding through Queensland Government’s Year of Indigenous Tourism Destination Support Program, which aims to grow the number of Indigenous tourism experiences in Queensland.
Dinner is a two-course meal with the main being a traditional baked local mackerel wrapped in banana leaves, served with bush tomatoes, bush basil seasoned with bush salt and a side of sweet potato or cabbage.
While dessert is a lemon myrtle panna cotta served with bush fruits.
All children (15 years and under) menu (pizza, chicken strips and chips, vegetarian pasta bake).
This event is a BYO alcoholic drinks, with all other drinks available for purchase on the evening.
Wan’di will be held at The Windmill Cafe, Bargara on May 14 from 5pm.
Tickets are $79 for adults and $29 for children.
