Tributes for Nicholas ‘Joel’ Wright after fatal car crash near Bundaberg

Two tight-knit Queensland communities are mourning the death of a young man killed in a single-vehicle crash near Bundaberg early this morning.

The death of young man, killed when the car he was a passenger in rolled near Bundaberg in the early hours of Saturday morning, has left two tight-knit Queensland communities in shock.

Nicholas “Joel” Wright, 23, died at the scene while the driver, a 23-year-old boy, suffered serious head injuries in the crash, which occurred at the intersection of Burnett Head and Gibsons roads about 2am.

Two other teenagers – a boy and girl- suffered minor injuries and were taken to Bundaberg Hospital in a stable condition.

Tributes have started to flow for Joel, who grew up in Mackay but had recently relocated to Gin Gin.

Lora Lewis from Airlie Beach posted a photo of her with Joel, with the caption, “a love I will never forget”.

Others have turned to Facebook to pay tribute to Joel.

Maree Jaym wrote “I love you forever buddy”.

Maddisan Billie-Rose Thomas wrote “Love u man … can’t believe it was u”.

Jessica Louise and Tanya Petersen both wrote “Love u mate”.

According to police, initial investigations indicate just after 2am, a white 2004 Holden Commodore was travelling along Burnett Heads Road when it left the road and rolled near the Gibsons Road intersection.

The three young crash survivors are all from Norville.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances of the crash and police are appealing to anyone who may have been in the local area around the time of the crash, or who has any information which may assist investigations, to come forward.

It’s understood police will investigate whether speed was a factor in the crash.

Anyone with relevant CCTV or dashcam vision is also urged to contact police.
