Founder of social media page says Bundaberg drivers need to expect the unexpected

Bundaberg drivers are being urged to “expect the unexpected”, but it’s not just police who are putting the message out this time - it’s other drivers. See if you’ve been caught out.

Bundaberg drivers are being given a “wake-up call”, but it’s just not police who are putting the road safety message out this time - it’s other drivers and the punishment isn’t fines, it’s social media.

Leon Wallace founded the Bundaberg’s Worst Drivers Uncensored group on Facebook.

It’s a public page made to shame bad driver behaviour and no one is immune from scrutiny.

The page is peppered with posts from members of the public and ranges from photos of double parking to dashcam footage of illegal moves and drivers failing to give way.

“It’s to point out community awareness on the drivers in Bundaberg, also community safety and inform people of the stupidly of some drivers in our region,” Mr Wallace said.

Mr Wallace highlighted some of the most common bad driver behaviours that landed in the group.

“Most common ones are parking, merging with who gives away (keep left unless overtaking), give way to your right and roundabouts same thing, give away to your right and do not enter a roundabout unless you can go all the way through - it’s designed to free up traffic.”

Mr Wallace said another issue was people “not looking when people are to stop or giveaway at a intersections”.

“It’s a wake-up call for bad driving and a warning to good drivers to expect the unexpected,” he said.

And cars aren’t the only vehicles to find themselves on the page, with a Neuron scooter snapped laying in a gutter.

With National Road Safety Week underway, stopping bad driver behaviour is well and truly in the spotlight.

Running until May 23, the annual week aims to put the focus on obeying the road rules.

“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Every time you use our roads, you can contribute to safer conditions simply through your own behaviour,” Transport and Main Roads director-general Neil Scales said.

“The lives lost on our roads this year reminds us how important it is to prioritise road safety.”

And while public shaming may be one tool in the battle for better driver behaviour, police always need dangerous incidents reported directly.

If you have something to report, contact Policelink on 131 444 any time.
