It’s already been a horror year on the region’s roads and this week drivers are being urged to drive so others survive for National Road Safety Week.

Transport and Main Roads Director-General Neil Scales said the week, held from 16-23 May, was an opportunity for all Queenslanders to lead the way in creating safer roads.

“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Every time you use our roads, you can contribute to safer conditions simply through your own behaviour,” he said.

“The lives lost on our roads this year reminds us how important it is to prioritise road safety.”

Southern Region‘s Road Safety manager Paul Anoleck said positive changes could happen if all road users played their part.

“National Road Safety Week is an opportunity to think about the way we drive and share the road,” Mr Anoleck said.

“Behave as though each person sharing the road with you is someone you care about. If we all lead by example, the number of deaths and injuries on our roads will decrease.”

In 2020, 66 people died on roads in the Southern Region, representing 23.7 per cent of the 2020 Queensland road toll.

National Road Safety Week is an initiative of the Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Group, established by Peter Frazer in memory of his daughter Sarah, who was tragically killed in a roadside crash in New South Wales in 2012.

This year’s event also coincides with the United Nations Global Road Safety Week from May 17 to 23.
