Avoca could be gaining a new gym and childcare space if a recent development application is approved.
A material change of use application for an indoor sport and recreation, and child care centre has been lodged with the Bundaberg Regional Council for a site on Heidke St, Avoca
Lather Industrial Park Pty Ltd, Vanwall Industrial Park Pty Ltd and Archie Archie Pty Ltd are the listed applicant for this application.
As outlined by the development proposal documents, Reel Planning Pty Ltd “has been engaged by the applicant to prepare and lodge a development application for a change of use and small-scale extension to an existing shopping centre at 14 Heidke Street, Avoca”.
“The application formally seeks a Development Permit for a Material Change of Use for Indoor Sport and Recreation (Gym) and Child Care Centre,” the document reads.
“The works involve the conversion of part of the existing Westside Shopping Centre (most recently used as a Shop (supermarket)) to an Indoor Sport and Recreation (gym) facility.
“The extensions include a small mezzanine level above the gym amenities and the use of part of the loading bay for outdoor functional training.
“The application also seeks to utilise a portion of the existing supermarket and shop tenancies for a childcare centre. This includes the removal of 15 car parking spaces to facilitate an outdoor play area.”
Should this development be approved, the application outlines the majority of the tenancy would be used as a gym, with the north-eastern portion being used for a child care centre.
The documents state plans to retain the existing retail tenancies along the eastern elevation and the amenities facilities and the central mall.
The plans indicate the child care will accommodate a maximum 26 staff and 100 children.
“To accommodate the outdoor play areas associated with the child care centre, 15 car parking spaces are proposed to be removed,” the document reads.
“This will result in a total of 185 car parking spaces remaining across the site.
“The indoor sport and recreation use (gym) seeks to operate 24 hours and the childcare centre seeks to operate between 6am and 7pm.”
The application is currently pending a decision by Bundaberg Regional Council.

Police divers on scene as car pulled from the Burnett River
