“The local sugar industry has had a strong history and has lot to look forward to, with the Mill crushing its second highest throughput tonnage of 1.423mt during the 2022 season,” Mr Harney said.

“I am particularly pleased we have resolved the Maryborough Cane Supply Agreement.

“I thank my fellow directors for their service and have every confidence in their ability to ensure Isis Central Sugar Mills ongoing success.”

Isis Central Sugar Mill chief executive Peter Hawe said the board was accepting of Mr Harney’s decision to retire to focus on his family business.

“Darren is to be commended for his 22 years of diligent service to the Mill and local sugar industry. His steady hand guided the company through what have been some very difficult years,” Mr Hawe said.

Bundaberg corporate communications consultant and political advisor Debbie Leis will join the Board and fill the casual director vacancy created by Mr Harney’s retirement.

“Mrs Leis has three decades of experience in business and all three levels of government, bringing fresh ideas and new perspectives,” Mr Hawe said.

The board will elect and officially announce a new chairman at the 2023 Annual General Meeting, where shareholders will hold a formal election.
