Control group for wild dog attacks

BUNDABERG Regional Council may set up a group aiming to stop attacks by wild dogs following several gruesome incidents in Childers.

BUNDABERG Regional Council may set up a group aiming to stop attacks by wild dogs following several gruesome incidents in Childers.

But some residents who have lost animals in attacks believe wild dogs may not be the problem.

Apple Tree Creek woman Evie Kerridge said she was almost certain domestic dogs killed 10 of her sheep.

“Our animals were attacked three times, but it all stopped after some local dogs were shot,” she said.

However, Mrs Kerridge said she thought the meeting planned to discuss the issue would still be beneficial.

“Maybe if they have information on controlling dogs,” she said.

“We need to know what we can and can't do if a dog comes onto our property.”

Mrs Kerridge said the dogs that attacked her animals were not just looking for food.

“They ate some, but they killed the others just for the fun of it,” she said.

“It was really heartbreaking to see.”

Another resident, Renee Svendsen, said her pet goat was mauled by a dog late last year.

“I think having a meeting is a good idea,” she said.

“It couldn't hurt.”

Ms Svendsen said she thought both wild and domestic dogs could be responsible for attacks in the area.

“I've heard so many stories,” she said.

“I know people who have had problems with wild dogs.”

Division councillor Tony Ricciardi said it was important for community members to attend.

“I urge all interested landholders to go along and discuss with council the issues at hand and how we can work together to come up with solutions,” he said.

The meeting will be held at the Apple Tree Creek Memorial Hall on June 22 from 7pm.
