A crowd of more than 5000 people flocked to Burnett Heads for the Lighthouse Rock 2023 festival on Saturday.
Revellers came from all parts of the country to see their favourite Aussie rock acts including The Screaming Jets and Baby Animals under clear skies, before The Living End and Icehouse took over as a classic Bundaberg sunset provided some relief from what had been a baking hot afternoon.
Sporting custom-made T-shirts announcing they were on a girls’ trip, “cheaper than therapy”, Janelle had flown up from Melbourne to celebrate her 50th birthday with friends Diane and Tiffany.
Another group of friends calling themselves “The Maldives Crew’”, after a cruise on which they had all met earlier in the year, assembled from around the country to keep the good times rolling in Bundaberg.
Inexplicably dressed as a prawn, Red was a crowd favourite as people jostled for photos with the Bundaberg local after an emotional and crowd-pumping set by The Screaming Jets, their first festival performance since the death of bass player Paul Woseen.
As night descended, Bundaberg MP Tom Smith took the stage to introduce The Living End, who delivered a typically high-octane performance with singer Chris Cheney leaping into the crowd and back without missing a beat.
Aussie rock legends Icehouse drew the evening to a close with renditions of their timeless classics Great Southern Land, Electric Blue and Nothing Too Serious that had the crowd screaming for more.
Organisers thanked the audience and staff for “making it a day to remember”.
“From the energy of the crowd to the bands onstage, we were humbled to see so many happy, smiling people enjoying themselves to a backdrop of classic Aussie rock,” festival promoter Lighthouse Presents director Gavin Hales said.
He said the next event would be on Saturday, October 19, 2024.
