Community Access Care plans for education hub at old BMG site

The old Bundaberg Motor Group (BMG) site on Bargara Rd could soon be transformed. Here’s what’s proposed for the site.

A former Bundaberg car yard and dealership site will be transformed into an educational hub for people with a disability if a development application is approved by council.

Local NDIS provider Community Access Care recently lodged a material change of use application with Bundaberg Regional Council to build the new hub at the former Bundaberg Motor Group site on Bargara Rd.

The proposed new facility would also become the organisation’s new headquarters once constructed.

According to the proposal document, the project would include reusing and renovating the existing buildings on site to “allow the future development of a vocational learning facility” targeted at people with various disabilities and special needs.

“The facility would educate participants in life-skills and vocational skills with a view to provide independence and skills so that participants can integrate within the workforce and the community generally,” the document says.

Community Access Care founder Julie McCracken said there were plans to include a commercial-sized kitchen, a technology area, a sensory experience zone and other training areas to teach participants “essential life skills”.

“In order to deliver a service that focuses on our participants’ quality of life, an educational hub is an essential part of our strategic plan to be the NDIS care provider of choice in Bundaberg,” she said.

“Our multipurpose facility is an all-inclusive environment where the Executive Team are privileged to work alongside our participants in the hub and see the positive impact our team are delivering on a daily basis.”

Ms McCracken said the hub would create employment opportunities for the participants which were essential for them learning lifelong social skills.

According to the proposal document, the facility would be open between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 12pm on Saturdays.

The site would also have about 10 participants on site at any one time, with a total of 18 employees both in office and support staff.
